Indoor Biking Continues

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I made good on my plans to go to the gym again.  I got on the bike again, but did not get as far as I did on Sunday.  I did 12 miles in 35 minutes, with the difficulty relatively high most of the way.  The last five minutes I tend to cool down on an easier setting and today I needed it.  Got some great stretching in before doing leg weights again (hamstrings, quads, leg-press), and then some more stretching.  The spot on my leg was pretty sore during some stretches, but overall it wasn’t terrible.  However, there is still a huge difference in how my left and right legs feel.  Here is the excercise bike I have been riding on at the AU fitness center, surprisingly we only have three of them..

Being on the excercise bike brings back some memories for me.  People that know me from college may recall my freshman year when I had suffered a knee injury.  Before heading home for winter break I ventured into the woods for an easy 11 mile run out the Middlesex Fells (Scott’s Run to be exact) with then Tufts captain J.R. Cruz (now an orthopedic doctor at Yale).  At about five miles in I tripped on a rock and my left knee landed on another rock.  It hurt, but I made the run back to campus without too much trouble.  I tried to shake it off, but my knee swelled up.  After a day or two of rest I started feeling a pain in my knee everytime I would try to run.  It felt like a tendon was catching everytime I took a stride, and it hurt, a lot.  After seeing a sports medince doctor a couple of days after Christmas, I was told not too run until January 22nd.

Now, at this point you are probably wondering why I am telling this story.  Well, during that month that I was not allowed to run I still had to go to practice.  So, at practice I took an exercise bike and rolled it up right next to the indoor track.  From there I could watch my teammates workout while I worked out.  A bunch of guys did this, so it was no big deal.  Eventually I got bored with this concept and decided, along with a few other injured guys, to move the bikes to the front steps of the Gantcher Center…….OUTSIDE!  We would put our gear on and go out into the cold and bike for 45 minutes.  It was great.  And thus the Lance Armstrong Indoor/Outdoor Stationary Bike Circuit was born.  I even made membership cards for those that joined me outside, mine is still in my wallet.

After a few days the Athletic Department started receiving calls from neighborhood residents complaining about our presence on the steps.  It was sad, because we were well behaved out there and were technically on school property.  However, in the end, the Assistant Athletic Director personally asked me not to continue biking on the front steps.  Although it dampened my spirits I honored her request and biked inside.

My knee would continue to hurt right up until January 18th.  I remember helping to setup for a meet that Friday night and still feeling pain.  I was so defeated,  I really believed it would be better by the 22nd.  I remember sitting on the pole-vault pads staring at the ground, wondering what I was going to do.

The next part of the story is 100% true and also extremely cliche.  The following day, things felt different.  They felt so different that I decided to play some football after our track meet.  I was crashing into high-jump pads, taking hits from Zach Chrisco, and running without pain.  Amazingly my injury was gone, and I knew it.  As a result I was able to “officially” go for a run that following Tuesday.  On January 22nd of 2002 I ran 3 miles, all indoors, in 21 minutes (8min, 7min, 6min).  Then the Patriots won the Superbowl, but that’s another story.

I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t believe the same thing will happen again.  I keep hoping that one day I am going to wake up and my leg is going to be better.  However, I am not sure it works that way. But then again, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Stretching and More Biking

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Well, my physical therapist and I have set a new timetable.  As of last Friday I am giving my leg two weeks of intense stretching and working out.  The goal is to work my leg as hard as I can and see where that gets me.  The key part is that I am not running, so I shouldn’t be making things worse.  After Friday’s bike workout I went to the gym on Sunday and Monday and did the same routine.  I took yesterday off for therapy and am getting back on the exercise bike again this afternoon.

Weekend Workout Warrior

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Well, technically Friday isn’t really the weekend, but it certainly kicks things off. Yesterday I decided to get my weekend started by making an honest effort with cross-training again. Some people out there may know that I give swimming a chance a couple weeks ago. That did not turn out well. I ended up being pretty sore for about a week and I remembered why I don’t really dig the pool. So this time I hopped on the bike up the AU fitness center and took a smarter approach. I ended up going 30 minutes, getting a 10.5 mile ride in. I worked up a decent sweat, and I only stopped to give me muscles a rest. I woke up this morning feeling like my hips had been hit with a hammer, so I am glad I didn’t push it further. In addition to the bike I also did some exercises with the leg-weight machines. Finally I finished things up with some stretching. Not a bad workout, but hopefully it’s only the beginning.

End Result: 30 minutes bike (10.5 miles), leg weights, 25 minutes stretching

Another Ryan Hall Video

If you are looking to get pumped, watch this video about Ryan Hall’s ridiculous workout. Josh Cox, a pretty elite marathoner himself, made the video.

I would embed this in the post, but it starts playing automatically, so here is the link….

The true nature of things

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

It’s depressing. I won’t try to kid myself with the idea that things are getting better.

Last week I went to see an orthopedic specialist in Chevy-Chase. His review of my situation finally netted an answer to the big question, what is wrong with me? Well, it turns out it’s not my hamstring, it’s not my back, it’s not a nerve problem, but rather a tendon connecting my hamstring to to the bone. He said it is isolated tendinitis, and that the area must pretty inflamed. It took the guy about 10 seconds to make that diagnosis. I believe him because he pushed on the painful spot for two seconds, then he looked at me and said, “yeah, that’s a tendon.”

Then he starts telling me that he is going to prescribe this steroid and that ultimately it should help. Dexamethasone is basically a glorified anti-inflammatory, but it’s 20-30 times stronger than hydrocortisone. I am not taking injections, instead I am undergoing something called iontophoresis. The simple version is that they hook up a couple of small electrodes and the steroid is forced into my body through an electric current. Sounds weird, right? It wasn’t too bad the first two times, and hopefully it I will get the inflammation down.

I am pretty motivated to get running right now, but not motivated for much else. I don’t want to swim. I don’t want to bike. I don’t really want to get on a weird stepper machine either. Nope, I want to get things back to normal. The weather is amazing right now, I feel like I am missing out.

Ryan Hall - Boston Long Run

This video is brought to us from the guys at FloTrack.

McArthur 5.5

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

This is a run I will be doing when I begin my training. It’s not really a standard training run, but rather a short run I’ll do for a couple weeks to get back into shape. I used to do this run as a “second run” once or twice a week. The loop is pretty simple, but is well lit and gives me options should I want to go shorter or farther. I’ll usually cross key bridge if I want to add on, or cut up Reservoir Road if it’s not really my day.
